Water Softener Systems

Water softeners are designed to remove the minerals that are picked up from limestone: calcium and magnesium. These products tend to react with soap and detergents and produce soap scum. When you remove the hardness, you can reduce your use of soap by up to 50%, the minerals do not accumulate in the hot water heater, and clothes can be cleaned more effectively.

Drinking Water Filters

There are two types of drinking water filters, conventional filters that remove chlorine and any metal impurities that may be in your water and a special filter system that employs reverse osmosis.

The System 101 filtration system fits conveniently under the sink and has a special faucet on your sink. You can make approximately 1000-1500 gallons before the need to replace filters.

The special reverse osmosis system triple filters the water and then demineralizes your water by forcing the water through a membrane. Only about 50% of water goes through the membrane while approximately 95% of all impurities are removed. The unit has a three gallon pressure tank under the sink and a special stainless steel faucet on the sink. The unit can be hooked up directly to an ice maker refrigerator. A majority of bottled water is made by the reverse osmosis process.

Well or Lake Water Disenfection

Well water can be disinfected in two ways:

If well water does not have iron, sulfur or manganese present and is not influenced by surface water (becomes muddy after a heavy rain), it can be efficiently disinfected by installing an Ultraviolet (UV) sterilizer after the air/water pressure tank. A cartridge or automatic filter is employed before the sterilizer to ensure that the water is clear.

Chlorination involves injection of sodium hypochlorite into the raw water, a retention tank to give time for sterilization and an automatic dechlorinator to remove the chlorine. (You must inject a high concentration of chlorine in the water to kill the bacteria and this level would be objectionable to drink.) If lake water is involved, an additional coagulation step is required so the colloidal turbidity can be removed. These colloidal particles may contain airborne viruses.

Sulfur and Iron Removal

Sulfur and soluble iron can be removed in two ways:

In addition to disinfection, chlorination will remove sulfur, soluble iron and maganese. The Culligan Super "S" system employs air oxidation over a special media. Sulfur, iron and manganese are removed, although it does not disinfect the water.
